Small World Christian Preschool Celebrates 25 Years

SUNLAND - Small World Christian Preschool celebrated its 25th birthday on May 20, 2007, first with a worship service at 9:30 am, followed by a luncheon and presentations at 11:00 am, at New Hope Community Church, 10438 Oro Vista Ave., in Sunland.

Highlights included recognition from Los Angeles City Councilmember Wendy Gruel, remarks from preschool founding director Ellen Brown, acknowledgement of achievements, a rededication of the school, music, lunch, prizes and a chance for graduates to visit their old classrooms.

“Whether you have been a student, teacher, board member, parent of an alumni, or just a loyal supporter, you are indeed a contributor to the nurturing and enrichment of our students as well as our long-term success,” said Director Lynda Mlynar.

The preschool was started by the members of Sunland First Baptist Church, which was renamed New Hope Community Church. Since the school’s inception, over 900 children have graduated from Small World. Attendees were encouraged to bring any pictures, anecdotes and memories to share. A good time was had by all.

Children Helping Children

The children of Small World Christian Preschool, a non-profit, half-day enrichment program of New Hope Community Church, have once again completed their annual community project. Alongside the members of the church, Small World’s three to five year olds collected children’s clothing for local families, as well as San Diego based Spectrum Ministries. For over 20 years Spectrum Ministries has traveled twice weekly to communities in Tijuana where they provide hot showers, clean clothing, and First Aid to children between the ages of 2 and 10.

“Scheduled around Easter time, our projects coincide with our bible verses of how much God loves us, and how He wants us to care for each other” says director Lynda Mlynar. “This year, we had the opportunity to reach out along side of our church family; together making a difference in the lives of other children”.

Each year Small World Christian Preschool strives to give the children many experiences and moments to remember. In the past years some of their proudest accomplishments have been teaching children to be aware of the needs of others. Past community services projects that SWCP kids and their families have participated in include Hop-A-Thons for Ahead With Horses, Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hunger Fund, Sunland-Tujunga Temporary Aid Center, and more.
